Palliative Care

Palliative care is an approach to care for people who have a serious illness which focuses on improving their quality of life-not just in body, but also in mind and spirit. It is different from care to cure illness, called curative treatment.

Our focus is to provide the best quality of life for our patients. When it comes to quality of life, each patient has his or her own vision. Palliative care is a holistic approach to help achieve this goal. It focuses on providing patients with relief from the symptoms, pain, physical stress, and mental stress of a serious illness- whatever the diagnosis. Palliative care is appropriate at any age and at any stage in a serious illness. It can be provided with curative therapy or hospice.

Palliative care is provided by our team which includes professionals from medicine, nursing, social work, chaplaincy, dietician, rehabilitation, and recreation. Our team collaborates effectively towards reaching the patient’s goals. We will educate the patient and families about what to expect and discuss ongoing care throughout the course of the patient’s stay. Our palliative care program is genuinely individualized and patient centered. What is important to the patient is what is important to us.

There can be fear and uncertainty, conflict and distress within families due to the complex decision making and determination of goals that must addressed at this time. Our Palliative care team aims to guide and assist the Resident and family in making decisions that enable them to work towards their goals during whatever time they have remaining. It is genuinely patient centered, meaning what’s important to them and their individual priorities. We can assist you in navigating these decisions, weighing benefits and risks of choices.

Our team supports you and your family every step of the way, not only by controlling your symptoms, but also by helping you understand your treatment options and goals. With this understanding and emphasis on the whole person, palliative care improves quality of life.
